My name is Maged, and I’m from Egypt.
Before coming to Australia, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Electronics, and Communications Engineering from Helwan University in Cairo. With nearly seven years of experience in network engineering, I decided to specialise further in cybersecurity, a field I’m passionate about.
So, I’m now pursuing a Master of Information Technology (Cybersecurity) at Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina Campus in Darwin.
I chose to study in the Northern Territory of Australia because of I had heard about the positive learning experience and the quality of education. The idea of studying here in Darwin, a natural and warm place surrounded by a rich Aboriginal culture, was truly exciting. I knew I would be in a supportive academic environment, where building my knowledge and understanding would enrich me.
When I arrived in Darwin, I felt so delighted and happy by the welcoming people and atmosphere. The Northern Territory’s pace of life is a refreshing change from the hustle of my previous life. I really appreciate the beauty and serenity that is surrounding me here in Darwin.
At CDU, I’ve embraced opportunities to grow as a leader. As Vice-President of the CDU Cybersecurity Club and a member of organisations like the Australian Information Security Association (AISA) and the CDU African Student Forum, I’ve gained valuable skills and built lasting relationships.
One of my proudest achievements was organising the Operational Technology and Cybersecurity Information Session at CDU. I also led a team during the GovHack competition, where we developed the DiscoverNT app, showcasing innovative solutions for the local community.
In addition to these, I was also the Postgraduate Officer for Charles Darwin University Student Council , a finalist for the ACS ICT Professional of the Year at the NT Digital Excellence Awards and received the Academic Excellence Awards in Asset Security and Risk Management course. I was also the winner of the Poster Project Challenge at the CDU IT Code Fair in 2024.
There are so many opportunities in the Northern Territory for students to volunteer, develop and excel in their field of study.
Beyond academics, I’ve been deeply committed to giving back to the community. Volunteering with Anglicare NT, Foodbank Australia, and CareFlight’s Trivia Night has been a fulfilling way to connect with and support the Northern Territory. I have also participated in events like the Northern Australian Emergency Response Competition at CDU.
These opportunities have allowed me to enhance my leadership, communication, and teamwork skills while making a meaningful impact.
In 2024, I was selected as a Study NT Student Ambassador and was also named a finalist for the International Student Volunteer of the Year Award. It was an honour to be recognised for my contributions.
I have had an incredible experience studying in the Northern Territory.
