The pre-departure COVID-19 testing requirement for passengers travelling to Australia from the People’s Republic of China, including Hong Kong and Macau, ended on 11 March 2023.
The requirement began on 5 January 2023 and was introduced as a caution in response to a significant wave of COVID-19 infections in China. The Australian Government has been monitoring COVID-19cases globally and reviewing epidemiological data.
Reports show the number of COVID-19 cases peaked in China inlate December 2022 and early January 2023, and there are currently no reports of new variants of concern.
Several other countries that implemented similar testing requirementsfor travellers from these locations have recently also either ended their arrangements or announced an intention to end them, including the United States, Korea, Japan, France and Italy.
